Canterbury A&P Show
The Rare Breeds Conservation Society of NZ organises the Rare Breed Display at Canterbury A&P Show annually since around 2014.
Since 2022 the horse section has been organised by Liselle Silver & Megan Hopkinson. Inspired by doing this, Megan and Liselle have gone on to start the Rare Horse Society of NZ to ensure we can accept more opportunities to attend different shows without requiring arranging the other livestock.
While it is still an RBCS event, it has been RHS members bringing this section and its growth. We believe in supporting the RBCS and their initiatives.

Grand Parade Canterbury A&P 2022
Canterbury Show had asked me in 2021 to invite rare breed horses to be in a parade in the main arena. As 2021 did not go ahead, plans were made for 2022. As there was no time slot for us to go in specifically ourselves, we instead joined the Grand Parade! Here are some highlights of this. It has not yet been done since. By this time, it had been 4 days for the horses enduring crowds and noise and helicopters overhead. Some never set off, some turned back right away. It was a big ask. The wind was getting up and we returned to most of the signs blown about, rescued by those who stayed behind. Those who made it in made a big impression and had a good time.
We have not repeated this as it tended to leave the display too empty.

Rare & Native breed show class Canterbury A&P 2023
This year the show class was held indoors beside the farrier competition. RHS advised the organisers that the environment was worrying to the horses and owners and we forfeited our entries. The horses often do not show and being indoors and with loud noises and farrier smells, they would not necessarily have coped. It also had us hidden away, and the point was to display them.
Judges were then sent to our area and we held the first show class in our area which was a success. This quieter location means the horses are relaxed and the public get a nice view while we partake. More entrants feel that they can sign up.

This website is a work in progress. Please reach out to correct and update information. We would like to feature great educational videos, photos of real horses proving their versatility and strengths, accurate preservation status numbers, news on the breeds from NZ and overseas, up to date contacts, links to websites, registries and associated entities for the breeds and more. In some instances placeholder or international images have been used where some nice local horses could be, we use what we can find at the time (hopefully without getting in trouble). We appreciate images supplied if you have any New Zealand based images.
